Where to Buy Isao Sato Elegance Pansies in the United States

If you have recently discovered the incredible ruffled pansies of Japanese breeder Isao Sato, you are not alone. These extraordinary flowers have been capturing the attention of gardeners and flower lovers for their dramatic ruffles, unusual coloring, and almost painterly appearance.

Until recently, finding Isao Sato Elegance pansies in the United States has not been easy. For Spring 2027, I am thrilled to be bringing a selection of these remarkable pansies and violas to Thief of Weeds, my specialty flower farm in Linden, Pennsylvania.

Who Is Isao Sato?

Isao Sato is a Japanese flower breeder and the grower behind Sato Nursery in Japan. His pansies and violas are known for taking a familiar garden flower and turning it into something completely unexpected.

Instead of the simple, uniform pansies many of us are accustomed to seeing at garden centers, Sato's flowers can have layers of heavily ruffled petals, unusual color combinations, dramatic edging, and subtle changes in tone from one bloom to another.

They look almost hand-painted.

That individuality is a large part of what drew me to them.

What Makes Elegance Pansies So Special?

One of the most fascinating things about the Elegance Pansy series is that the plants are not meant to look identical.

Colors, markings, ruffling, and patterns can vary from plant to plant—and sometimes even as the plant continues blooming.

That means you aren't simply buying a particular flower color. You are growing a collection in which each plant can have its own personality.

Cooler temperatures can also intensify the colors and ruffling, making these especially exciting flowers for the cool days of early spring.

For gardeners who love unusual varieties, vintage colors, romantic flowers, or plants that are just a little different from what everyone else is growing, these are something special.

Elegance Antoinette

The Elegance Antoinette Collection is the softer, more romantic side of the series.

Antoinette produces beautifully ruffled blooms in a range of pastel and muted shades. You may see blush pink, lavender, cream, soft yellow, peach, mauve, and other subtle combinations.

No two plants are guaranteed to look exactly alike—and that's the beauty of the collection.

Elegance Twilight

If Antoinette is romantic and ethereal, Elegance Twilight is her moodier sister.

Twilight leans toward deeper, richer colors including burgundy, wine, purple, violet, red, and beautifully contrasting edges.

The heavily ruffled flowers can look surprisingly dramatic for a pansy, especially as cool spring temperatures bring out their darker coloring.

For Spring 2027, I am also adding Elegance Dawn to Dusk.

Dawn to Dusk continues the beautiful ruffled form of the Elegance pansies while bringing together a wonderful range of colors and tones. Because of the natural variation within these collections, part of the fun is seeing exactly what your individual plants become as they begin to bloom.

That's one of my favorite things about growing these flowers—you aren't opening a box of identical plants. You are watching a collection of individual flowers reveal themselves.

Signature Viola Midnight Blush

The 2027 collection also includes Signature Viola 'Midnight Blush.'

While pansies tend to steal the spotlight because of their large ruffled blooms, specialty violas can be every bit as beautiful. Midnight Blush adds another option for gardeners who love the unusual colors and artistry associated with these Japanese-bred flowers.

I can already imagine these pansies and violas spilling out of spring containers and hanging baskets together.

Velvet Ruffles

Velvet Ruffles may be one of the most dramatic additions to the 2027 collection. As the name suggests, this selection is all about texture—lush, heavily ruffled petals with the rich, romantic appearance that makes Japanese specialty pansies so irresistible.

The blooms have that wonderful almost fabric-like quality that makes you want to stop and look at each flower individually. Like the other specialty selections in this collection, natural differences in color and markings are part of their charm.

Growing Elegance Pansies in Spring

Pansies are cool-season flowers, which makes early spring one of the best times to enjoy them.

Unlike heat-loving summer annuals that need warm weather before they can go outside, pansies thrive during the cooler part of the growing season.

Here in Central Pennsylvania, that means they can provide beautiful color well before many of our summer flowers are ready.

Elegance pansies can be grown in garden beds, containers, window boxes, porch planters, and hanging baskets. Their unusual blooms make them especially beautiful planted where you can see them up close.

Should I Buy a Plug or a 4-Inch Plant?

For Spring 2027, Thief of Weeds will offer different options depending on whether you would like to grow the plants yourself or purchase a more established plant.

Pansy Plugs

A plug is a small, young plant grown in an individual cell. It is much smaller than the finished pansies you normally see for sale at a garden center.

The advantage is that you get to grow the plant on yourself—and plugs are much easier to package and ship.

Our Spring 2027 Elegance pansy and viola plugs are scheduled to ship in March, weather permitting.

Once received, they can be transplanted into larger pots and grown on until they are ready for your containers or garden.

4-Inch Pansy Plants

For local customers who would rather skip the plug-growing stage, I will also be growing a limited number into 4-inch pots.

These will be available for farm pickup in Linden, Pennsylvania, in April.

This is a great option for gardeners near Williamsport and throughout Lycoming County who want plants that are farther along and ready to enjoy.

Because these are specialty plants and my quantities are limited, the Spring 2027 Elegance Pansy and Viola Collection is being offered as a preorder.

Preordering allows me to reserve your plants before the spring growing season begins.

Can Elegance Pansies Be Shipped?

Yes. I am offering shipping on young plug plants for Spring 2027.

Because these are live plants, shipping is a little different from mailing seeds or other garden products. Individual states may have their own agricultural requirements for live plant shipments.

Thief of Weeds is working with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture to make sure our live plants are shipped in accordance with the requirements for each destination.

We plan to ship eligible orders throughout the United States except Alaska and Hawaii. If an agricultural restriction prevents me from legally shipping your plants to your state, your affected order will be fully refunded.

Shipping dates may also be adjusted when necessary if extreme temperatures would make shipping unsafe for the plants.

I would much rather hold your plants for a safe shipping window than send them into weather that could damage them along the way.

Young plugs are available for shipping to eligible states, while locally grown 4-inch plants will be available for pickup at the farm in Linden, PA, near Williamsport.

These aren't flowers I expect to have sitting around in large quantities once spring arrives. I ordered them because I fell in love with them myself, and I knew other gardeners would feel the same way.
